As a third year first grade teacher, I have become addicted to finding and creating literacy activities for workstations or centers. I love to see and hear the excitement of the students as they are highly engaged in these learning activities. As my second year came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect and plan on how I can make my RTI period more exciting and engaging. This year I would love to introduce a fully functioning listening center into my literacy workstation rotation. A listening center is a great tool for learners of all levels. Struggling readers will get a great model of reading. They will be exposed to new vocabulary, fluent reading and expression. They will also be motivated to continue to practice their reading skills. On level and above level students will also learn new skills from a listening center. They will be able to enhance their reading fluency and expression skills. Young learners really enjoy read alouds. This listening center will provide my students will the opportunity to focus on the sounds of words and provide a model of fluent reading. These audio books will tap into the imaginations of my young learners. Audio books have interesting sound effects and music. There are also multiple narrators that are motivating and fun for young learners. The amounts of activities that go along with a listening center are endless. Activities can range from comprehension, sequencing, comparing and contrasting and the list goes on!
