It's hard to get kids to try new foods. Oftentimes, children fall into the comfort of unhealthy snacks and meals. Because of the cultural differences in diet and practice, or difficulty accessing healthier foods due to income, the issue especially large for many of my students, who are low income and from immigrant families. This makes it more difficult to try new foods; many of my students refuse to eat vegetables and fish or otherwise healthy foods because it is so unfamiliar to them. It is common sense that eating well helps prevent disease, allowing children to stay in school more, that full and balanced meals increase focus in school, and that healthy eating habits help ward off future health issues; so the issue of unhealthy eating habits is an issue that must be addressed. The activity I plan to execute is to supply an assortment of healthy foods, and host an event in which families and their children can work together to create a dish that is both healthy and agreeable to the child. The significance of this event is to educate the families to the importance of healthy eating habits, and how to prepare healthy meals for their children as they will be dictating the child's diet for most of their child hood. The intent of this education is to better the future health of the children by empowering their parents, which will in turn empower the children to do better in school and lead healthier lives.
