Reading transforms lives. Reading excellent literature connects students to the world, giving them the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of others, to empathize with people far different from themselves, and to hopefully be inspired to positively impact the people and places of the world, be it close to home or oceans away. We want to nurture our students’ intelligence, creativity, perseverance, and success in any and all endeavors they take on. However, surpassing even this must be our responsibility to instill within them a passion for the world and empathy for the people within it. We need to expose students to the lives of others in such a way that they nearly feel they are living those lives themselves. Books do that. Books can draw students into the lives of people wholly different from their own and embed in them an empathy and duty to others unattainable by any other means. We want our students’ lives to be more than just successful. We want them to be deeply rewarding. And for that, they must not just live for themselves, but work to enrich the lives of others. For that, we need books, lots and lots of books.
