Keeping Up With Technology Without Any Technology?
Funded Dec 17, 2021Unfortunately, these days technology is just as important as a pen and a notepad. Many of our school computers are missing because they have never been returned after we gave them away for remote learning. Now our kids who need technology cannot access it until you all! This project afforded multiple students the chance to do surveys, work on a campaign to fund the fire relief in the Bronx and do virtual college visits. The donation you provided offered children ways to think about a future and access the world around them and we are so thankful for that!
We expect so much from these little people and we know they need resources to complete these things but without DonorsChoose we would have no way to help students meet our expectations. Thank you for making our expectations possible.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sheck
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 7 other donors. The LEGO Club, Giving Students with Autism Invaluable Social Skills
Funded Nov 11, 2021Our LEGO Club members' faces lit up when we showed them what we had received. I personally told them that this is how much the world cares and believes in us. We have only just used the emotion LEGOs and those specifically help to highlight the generosity that indeed makes a direct impact.
These emotion LEGOs have been great because the kids are using feeling words to combine with facial expressions! For example "a happy but content face" is a needed lego asked from one student to another, whereas sometimes the response will include something like "that is not happy like I meant, that is an enthusiastic face". This then allows BOTH parties to directly (without a prompt) in REAL time consider what face is authentic to what feelings and that in turn helps authentic socialization needed in real-time real-world situations!
A nonexistent reality when money wasn't available limited the depth of what we could do and therefore limited our ability to grow. Once the idea of a DonorsChoose came into the picture we could finally dream and in dreaming, we could help our students grow in new and different ways. What we are trying to say is that dreaming before you all donated was easy but limited, with the prospect of donation we were able to dream and add another element of social skills learning this ASD population that they desperately need.
What I am really saying is thank you for more than just the funds thank you for the allowance to dream and think outside the box.”

Safe Space for the Tears and Fears
Funded Dec 9, 2019During this tough time, I love reflecting on the room that you helped me create. This room was a symbol for me and my students. Each one of them enjoyed it so much and we cannot wait to return. This room provided a sense of comfort for my students that they could not find elsewhere.
The room held tears and fears as promised. On a bean bag chair, a student cried about her transition to a shelter. Another cried when they realized they wouldn't see mom after an ACS removal. Our "Calm Corner" was used by a young boy who was frustrated looking for his sister.
But most importantly, the room was a place of peace, I taught kids how to let go of things they could not control, and how to meditate on that to eventually watch it fly away. This is symbolic right now, while I work remotely and the students learn remotely. In this room, they felt safe. They learned to trust me, and now because of your help and donations to making this room a possibility, they still trust me through this cold time of remote learning.
This donation touched so many and we can't wait to return to our safe space.”
