My students need two Virco Rectangular tables and a Correll Round Table to begin our transition to a flexible classroom. Our school is VERY diverse. We cater to students of varying ethnicities, culture, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Meeting the needs of these diverse learners means using unique approaches that reaches each learner. I want to begin addressing their needs by establishing a safe and comfortable learning environment. Research shows that by implementing flexible seating in a classroom, students are more engaged, more likely to participate, and utilize more critical thinking skills. I have been teaching third grade for two years now and this year my grade level departmentalized, so I am now teaching twice the amount of students, which means twice the amount of students to reach. Right now, my room consist of desks and a few other options for students to work at. I'm striving to create an environment where students can work collaboratively and comfortably. The first step in doing this is removing the desk and replacing them with different table options. I'm really looking at how I can best support my kids working collaboratively and I can't do it if I've isolated them in rows and every student is an island. I am blessed to work at such a supportive school! It truly takes "out of the box" thinking to address the needs of all these unique learners. These tables will replace the desk in my room and can be adjusted to different heights. Some will be lower for learners who are more comfortable on the floor, others will stay at a traditional height for students who prefer a typical chair, and other tables may be higher for my kids that love to stand. Whatever the height, this will give students the ability to choose what best fits their needs and their learning. Thank you for stopping by and helping build our flexible classroom!
