With an iPad in hand, students who currently wrestle to type and draw mathematics with a mouse or trackpad will be way faster and more natural in expressing their mathematical thinking, using a stylus and tablet. Teaching digitally over the past few months has made it abundantly clear that students can access incredible programs and websites. With distance learning, students most in need will engage using this iPad in a significantly more powerful way. We use Google Classroom, Desmos, Zoom, and other online learning platforms in concert with a curriculum that engages students in mathematics that is both highly collaborative and extremely visual. Thinking mathematically and showing that thinking real-time, requires a lot of students. Who ever learned math by typing? Math is a back-of-the-envelope enterprise. Sketch boxes and graph boards.. that's where the action is; that's where a student with an iPad and stylus will flourish. That's the learning at home. In person, I will be able to put students in small groups and let them explore the mathematics on the iPad, watch an instructional video if they are absent one day, or work to create meaningful projects to showcase their mathematical understanding. We will start with six iPads and work towards a class set. In the meantime, we have no problem identifying six students who will benefit from the leg up. Their increased confidence will change the equation for their peers as well.
