Do You Need That Many Sheets of Paper?
Funded Nov 22, 2019It has been a pleasure watching my students use all the wonderful resources provided. There was a huge Social Studies project that my students did describing early Hominids. From finding out who Lucy was to discovering the Ice Man in the Alps.
The research required computer paper, markers, highlighters and glue. Gathering all the materials and following the directions showed the outcome. As they used the materials, I reminded them of the generosity of DonorsChoose and all of the materials that was donated. Needless to say the pencils are all used along with the computer paper. It is with heartfelt appreciation that all of my students, as well as myself, say thank you!”

“I Promise I’ll Return That!”
Funded Sep 13, 2019Pencils, erasers, dry markers are all tangible items. Everyday students are asking to borrow a pencil or an eraser. What a pleasure it is to let them keep a pencil or an eraser. Oftentimes we as teachers are so concerned about not having the things for our students, yet with the generosity of friends and family through Donors Choose all of their supplies are being met. The art projects that they have created shows the impact of having these supplies has on their creativity. All of my students have personal folders to keep their printouts in. It is a pleasure to have students refer back to handouts in a folder that was provided. Keeping organized is one of the best ways students can improve academically. Thank you all for your support and generosity in helping my students with the supplies needed.”

“How does your Classroom Smell this Fresh?”
Funded Aug 26, 2019Everyday a teacher or one of my students says; "You have the best smelling room in the building." When it comes to sanitizing and keeping my classroom clean, it is a top priority for me. When the environment is clean and inviting, learning becomes easier.
Each day my students look forward to cleaning their desk with the Clorox cleanups and taking pride in what their area looks like. If there is a day that goes by and I did not clean the desk, I will be reminded by several students. The Lysol spray is used at the end of the day when my students have gone home. It is an extra layer of a germ free classroom. Thank you all for supporting my projects and keeping my classroom clean and sanitized.”

Funded Feb 14, 2019Trying to keep the germs from this classroom has been a challenge. The plethora of tissues has truly benefited each of them. Not having runny noses has been and continues to be a problem. However, having the tissues certainly assists with keeping the germs down. Spraying the classroom at the end of the day with Lysol and cleaning the desk with the Clorox clean-ups runs those germs out of the room. Having 60 plus students, many of which, have or had the flu or a terrible cold can be stopped with the proper supplies. All of the tissues will be used along with the Lysol spray and Lysol wipes. Your generosity is truly appreciated.”

“Do You Have an Extra?” “Can I Borrow Your?”
Funded Aug 28, 2018The supplies of pencils, markers, glue sticks to name a few things, have eliminated the constant; can I borrow question. Students have collaborated with their peers to create amazing art presentations. The supplies are used and readily available for the students to use. One of the assignments was to create a display depicting the Five Themes of Geography. With the elaborate color choices of markers and colored pencils, students created beautiful displays throughout the classroom. Everyone that entered the classroom was amazed at the beautiful displays and the amazing color selections. Thank you donors choose for helping to end the age old question; "Can I borrow?”

Funded Jun 18, 2018To say thank you is a true understatement! Everyone passes by the Classroom and stops in to smell the cleanliness. The wipes and the Lysol have kept the room free of colds at a time when colds and flu season is up and running. Many of my students appreciate cleaning and sanitizing their desk. When I think of this project, it brings me joy knowing that I'm doing what I can to keep my students well. The hand sanitizers keep the germs at bay. Once again on behalf of myself and my students, thank you!”

Funded Jul 8, 2017The impact that these books have had on my students is inexplicable joy! Throughout the course of a week my students are able to sit quietly and choose a just right book for themselves. One of my students asked; "What is a just right book?" My answer was simple; "A just right book is one that you can relate to." As I watch their enthusiasm for reading these books, it brings tears of joy that I've been able to open up to my students the possibility of reading for fun and not just to pass a test.
Of course getting students excited about reading takes time and energy. The first thing that I did was have the students fill out a survey of when they read, what types of books they read, do they have a quiet place to read at home, if so, where. I also had them fill out a questionnaire on the books they have read within the last year; do they have books to read at home, do they read for fun, do they read to a sibling or does a older sibling or parent read to them? What I found was that many students are not given the necessary stimuli to read. Parent engagement is essential if students are to develop a love for reading. The end of September was meet your child's teacher. I had so many parents attend and my push was for them to read with their children and read to them. I showed them the books from Donars Choose and mentioned the project. Many parents were pleased and very appreciative for the books. A large population of my students were born outside of the United States with limited resources it made it difficult for them to have access to public libraries, therefore, giving these students an opportunity to read quietly has had a profound affect on my students. To give an example; One student from Mexico picked up a book and said; "I can't wait to read this book." I asked him why and he said; "because it's about me and my feelings about life here in America." Now that's amazing!
As I watch my students get excited about reading, I think back to my own love for reading and the major impact it has had on my life. Giving students the opportunity they need to grow as preteens and develop a love for various genres of literature will stay with them a lifetime. Three times per week time is allotted for them to read quietly and reflect on what they have read by writing in their reading journal. At the end of each week I collect their journals so that I can assess if they truly understand what they are reading. Additionally, using the Flocabulary website teaches them literacy by means of urban videos that students have related to. The lyrics are made for them to tap the beat or sing along with the video, the message given is always positive and clear. Thank you all for giving my students the opportunity to fall in love with books and reading for fun!”
