Many of my freshmen have told me horrifying tales and bone chilling anecdotes of how they have "...never read a whole book!" These same students once rolled their eyes so hard at the thought of reading, they knocked themselves out of their desks. However, now they have ownership of their reading by embedding high interest, self selected books and giving no strings attached time to relax and read. They now excitedly share titles and summaries, encourage each other, and make desperate requests for more books. These new titles are desperately needed! This project is to expose students to an increased level of literacy by having them read books of their choice and their interest. They select the titles, check out the books from the class library, and then get comfy to read. We started at only being able to sustain our reading for ten minutes, but now we want to add more time to our class period because 50 minutes just isn't enough - even for our self declared "non - readers"! This is no strings attached reading, but sometimes we just need to share, so we journal our thoughts, our connections, our advice, and our fears into rigorous writing to support our reading. This combination has had a measurable effect on our Lexile scores! We would love to add more books to our (small) library to keep our reading going! They line up to add more titles to our book wish list!
