  • Everyone Needs Privacy At Times!

    Funded May 6, 2022

We are SO excited to share our new table dividers with this class and for years to come! Even more than that, I am excited to share how you all have demonstrated generosity, kindness, and support for education. You are tremendous role models for my students. It is with a grateful heart that I accept this gift to our classes!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Stemper

  • A Book Is a Mirror and a Window!

    Funded Mar 7, 2020

I am absolutely wowed by the kindness and support I have once again received from my school community and the donors of DonorsChoose. You have again enriched my students lives! I know my students seeing themselves in our classroom library will be both engaging and motivating. I know that seeing pictures of diverse characters and learning about other cultures will support the naturally tolerant and kind children that are growing in my classroom this year and for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Stemper

  • The WRITE Stuff

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

The Firsties and I would like you to know how much your donation has impacted our daily life in the classroom! The beautiful new whiteboards and complete set of clipboards have allowed us to expand our choice of seating, added excitement to our writing and word work, and encouraged kids to show what they know!

We use the whiteboards all day, every day! We use them to help us solve and explain our thinking in math. We use them to practice our sight words and figure out tricky word spelling. We use them to respond as individuals to a lesson. We also use our clipboards daily. They allow us to spread out and find comfortable spaces to write and respond. They give us both privacy when we need it and the ability to work with a partner and small group.

The kids are still SO excited and appreciative for your generous donation. I wish you could have heard their squeals of delight as we opened the packages! As I teacher, I was thrilled, too! The use of whiteboards and clipboards has expanded my ability to individualize and support my students more readily. It has also allowed me to continually observe and evaluate my students learning to better plan my instruction. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Stemper

  • Passionate Reader Project

    Funded May 18, 2017

Each year, I open my door to an eager group of learners. They have heard great stories read aloud to them, both at home and in kindergarten. Now they are ready to take the reins. They want to know what reading can be for them. I want to take this window of opportunity to capture that excitement. I want them to understand that reading is done to learn, to grow, to enjoy, and to help us become the best people we can be. I want to create kids who cannot only be accurate readers, but readers who are passionate about reading. I want them to get lost in books.

One of the ways I do this is by sharing my own enthusiasm for reading. We talk about the adventures that we can take through reading. We explore how reading is a personal conversation between us and the author. We wonder about things and use books to help us seek answers. In order to shine this light on reading, having current texts about topics that excite kids is key. This grant allowed me to purchase books that my students couldn't wait to get in their hands.

The arrival of the books from the grant breathed new life into my classroom library. Kids wanted to extend reading time through snack because they couldn't put the books down. As a teacher, my heart is full. As someone who knows that these are our future leaders, my mind is at peace. Thank you for helping me build the tools to create students who both can and want to read!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Stemper

Reading motivation research is clear: Allowing students to make choices about their reading material increased the likelihood that they would engage more in reading. Research suggests that providing genuine student choices increases effort and commitment to reading. Providing balanced book collections at all grade levels is vital to engagement during both reading instruction and self-selection. This work suggests that a balanced collection includes lots of informational titles and a variety of print materials. Researches have noted that nonfiction books were the overwhelming choice of first grade students. My students are curious. Help me ignite their passion by allowing them to see reading as a means to learn and create even more questions.
