Funded May 18, 2017Each year, I open my door to an eager group of learners. They have heard great stories read aloud to them, both at home and in kindergarten. Now they are ready to take the reins. They want to know what reading can be for them. I want to take this window of opportunity to capture that excitement. I want them to understand that reading is done to learn, to grow, to enjoy, and to help us become the best people we can be. I want to create kids who cannot only be accurate readers, but readers who are passionate about reading. I want them to get lost in books.
One of the ways I do this is by sharing my own enthusiasm for reading. We talk about the adventures that we can take through reading. We explore how reading is a personal conversation between us and the author. We wonder about things and use books to help us seek answers. In order to shine this light on reading, having current texts about topics that excite kids is key. This grant allowed me to purchase books that my students couldn't wait to get in their hands.
The arrival of the books from the grant breathed new life into my classroom library. Kids wanted to extend reading time through snack because they couldn't put the books down. As a teacher, my heart is full. As someone who knows that these are our future leaders, my mind is at peace. Thank you for helping me build the tools to create students who both can and want to read!”
With gratitude,
