Teaching math virtually is a challenge, especially when families don't have the necessary tools at home. If we were all in the classroom together, students would have manipulatives at the ready to enhance their learning during math games and lessons. These manipulatives are essential tools for building number sense. In both Kindergarten and Second grade, building number sense is the key for future math success. Playing cards, dice, base ten blocks, and unifix cubes are tools that give students the power to see meaning in numbers, which will build on the skills they need to be successful in the grades beyond. Counting chips have multiple uses, including while playing math games, seeing order, and groupings, and more. My students have shown an interest in math, and, while we have virtual tools, there is no substitute for hands-on learning. This project will only help them solidify and build understanding.
