Many of my students are not able to bring in supplies at various points in the school year. Others are high energy who can't sit still or are easily distracted and are in need of sensory outlets to focus. With a tightening budget nationwide, students are missing out on great learning opportunities in the classroom. Supplies and sensory needs are crucial to my Title I students' success in order to focus on their academics rather than the hardships that they face on a daily basis. Students who have brought in fidget spinners have shown a level of success to stay on task. I am asking for sensory balls for my class which can be less distracting than the spinners. I have also seen success with students who listen to electronic and classical music when working on individual assignments. Headphones have been useful to connect to electronics, but supplies are limited and our school budget struggles to replace worn headphones. My students do a lot of writing and erasing in all subjects. They write multiple drafts in their journals and other assignments. My students also take an enormous amount of notes in Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies, and are in need of simple supplies such as pencils, erasers, and handheld pencil sharpeners. Also, because behavior management has been a primary focus for the success of my classroom, I am asking for timers that will be used for assignments as well as class rewards for positive reinforcement when students display hard work and good behavior.
