A Reader Lives a Thousand Lives
Funded Mar 10, 2018We were all so excited when our new books arrived! We only have two weeks until the FSA reading test so my students will really benefit from these new and exciting novels. I spent half of each class performing 'book talks' to get the students interested in the new titles. 'Book talks' are short sessions where Describe books in our class library. Many of the books were specifically picked out for students that are reluctant to read. I noticed several of these students reading their shiny new books under their desks because they were too excited to wait until they were out of class. By the end of the day EVERY book from this project was checked out. A new book means the world to these students. This is likely the first time anyone has given them a brand new book to read and I can see how much this means to them in the gentile way they handle the novels. The excitement in my classroom was priceless today and I will never be able to describe how grateful I am to all of you that support my students without ever even meeting them. They do not go home to the best situations but today many of them went home with a brand new book and smile on their face.”
With gratitude,

Books Are the Only True Magic
Funded May 13, 2017The books you funded arrived the day our schools opened after Hurricane Irma. As you may know, our community was hit hard by this natural disaster. Oak Hammock Middle School was used as a shelter for 3,000 citizens. While we are very happy that everyone was safe, this unfortunately led to some damage including our class SMART Board which was vandalized.
These books could not have come at a better time. Some of our students lost everything and all of them were all impacted in some way. They could really use a good book as an escape during these hard times. The second the books arrived my students were uplifted. They all watched eagerly as I unpacked the shiny new novels they had been waiting for. 15 books were checked out within the first 1 hour. By the end of the day I only had 5 books left on the shelf.
I ordered these books last year so the students that requested them are now in 8th grade. They asked about the book shipment all year and were so excited to come by and pick them up. Several books, including 13 Reasons Why and Everything, Everything have a wait list of over 5 students. They asked me to thank you all for your generous donation. They still are shocked that strangers care so much about their education. For many of them this is the first time they have been given a brand new book and I am forever grateful that you all were a part of that special experience.”
With gratitude,
