As adults, we are taught that all movements come from our cores. To get students started with this concept, we first have to work on their balance, which largely comes from their cores. Students need a fun and engaging way to work on their cores. This balance board gives student a different experience besides their normal boring balance beams. I first noticed the lack of coordination in our gymnastics unit. I started out using "tight ropes" (jump ropes laid out on the ground) and students really struggled with balancing. From gymnastics, we moved on to throwing and catching. With throwing, all strength comes from their cores, and students struggled with throwing for distance. Flash-forward to the end of the year, and we are working on fitness. Our cores have improved, but students still struggle with endurance and over all strength. Having a strong core, is the basis of all human movement. Without a basic grasp of how to improve your core, students will struggle with all sport and fitness movements.
