We are proud to say that we are one of few Title 1 public elementary International Bachlorette Primary Years Programme school. However, we struggle to provide enough intervention to make strong impacts on our struggling readers. Dr. Richard Allington has done some fantastic research around achievement and reading gaps among different groups of students. Some of his research focused on the impact of the summer-slide, especially on students such as those here at McCarver, a high-poverty, diverse urban school. It all came down to access. Many of our students just don't have access to books outside of school for many reasons. This project will get books and magazines of their interest in their hands and make reading something we can all enjoy instead of an overwhelming struggle.
