Every day my students have the opportunity to grow their reading brain and build independence during Read to Self as part of Daily 5. While I am doing Guided Reading with a small group, the rest of my students build their reading stamina by reading the words and pictures from books they have selected from our classroom library. Every Monday, students pick books to read throughout the week and keep in their book boxes for easy access during Read to Self time. Our current cardboard book boxes are falling apart due to the larger size of picture books my students love to select, and many of the books do not fit inside. These larger plastic book boxes would provide my students with a more durable way to store their precious weekly reading material in a clean and organized system. So much of my emphasis this year has been on the magic of books and the importance of treating them with respect and appreciation. When books don't fit in the boxes and/or rip the cardboard in order to fit, my students' lose some of that magic and sense of how books are to be treated. Help me create an organized, bright, literacy rich environment that nurtures my students' appreciation for the magic of books and reading while allowing them to grow their independence as readers.
