  • A Joyful Environment!

    Funded Jan 12, 2022

I want to say a huge thank you for your generous donations. My class and I greatly appreciate it. Each student in my classroom has everything they need to become successful learners. The preferred seating arrangement and the rugs do not only provide comfortable environment, it also gives children choice and opportunity to sit at a spot or a chair that works for them. In addition, my student are also benefiting from the calming tool when they need to focus or reflect on their decisions. Thank you so much.”

  • Powerful and Diverse Books!

    Funded Dec 19, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donation. The books that arrived are wonderful. Our classroom now includes some of the best diverse books. Having a diverse collection can support all of my students in finding characters that they can read and connect with on some level while affirming their own cultural identities. The diverse books also encourage and show positive insights about others. We now are reading about characters that we all can connect with.

The diverse books that we received has messages of inclusion by including everyone in their representation. Regardless of race, religion, and gender, these books establish connections between all of us. The books show the world as it should be, a world that we want to see. A world full of kindness, acceptance and positive mindset.

I had a student say "Mrs. Rivera, this girl in the hijab has the same scarf as me. She also felt like me in school." I had students say "My family is all different shades too" when they read "Skin Like Mine".

It was a great feeling. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rivera

  • Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

    Funded Sep 13, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donations. Our class greatly appreciates it. We are always using the Scholastic News articles during Reading, Writing and Social Studies. We especially love when the articles directly connect to our units of study. For instance, the article on the colonial America, directly connected to our Colonial Times unit in Social Studies.

The Scholastic News articles are also great because our students have the access to use the digital copies as well. Due to remote learning, not everyone has the access to the texts in our school. Since Scholastic News articles gives the access to its digital copies, our students are extremely thankful and are excited to learn. Our students love to watch the videos that are connected to the articles. In addition, there is a feature where our students can listen to the reading of the article. This is a great feature for my English Language Learners.

Once again, thank you so much donors. Without you guys, this would not have been possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rivera

  • Games Help Us Learn

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My students and I are so thankful for your support. The games that we received allowed ALL students to be engaged. Students that usually struggle in Math and are hesitant in giving Math a chance, were excited to play the Math games. The English Language Art games helped my students better understand certain concepts that I taught.

All of the games that we received not only helped students academically but also helped then to develop their social skills. Students that usually do not interact with each other bonded when they teamed up to play the game.

Thank you so much for being wonderful and generous.”

  • Building a Great Library!

    Funded Dec 29, 2017

Some of my students had previously expressed that there are not enough interesting books in our library, therefore it is difficult for them to choose an exciting book to keep them engaged. When we received the package, I had the same students open the box and help me label the books. They were beyond thrilled with the new addition to our library.

During our Independent Reading block, students sit within their book club groups. In our book clubs, we are reading the great books that were provided with the help of special donors. Some students partner read to work on their fluency. Other students read independently for 50 minutes and then have a six minute discussion of the book they read.

These set of books are keeping my students engaged. They can't wait to read the books and then meet with their group member to discuss it. It is a great sight to see my students truly enjoying reading. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rivera

  • Which Article is Your Favorite?

    Funded Oct 18, 2017

In my classroom, I give out the Scholastic News articles twice a week. They receive one article on Monday morning, during arrival time. The second time they receive the article is on Friday, during reading. Both times, my students have the choice of reading the articles with a partner. My darlings love to read and discuss the articles they read. These articles are amazing for many reasons. Every article includes something historical and at least one thing that is currently happening in the media that they can connect with. They also love the persuasive topics that every article presents. On many occasions, I see some partnerships debating.

These articles are not only motivational and engaging for my students. They also encourage communication. As a result, my students build their English language skills.

Thank you everyone who donated. You rock!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rivera

  • Let's Get Comfortable!

    Funded Sep 25, 2017

The moment the boxes came, I used it as an opportunity to talk about kindness and giving to others. I had mentioned the importance of donors choose and the generous donors that made all of it possible. Some students automatically expressed their gratitude.

When the students first saw the chair cushions and the wobble chair, there was automatic excitement. All of the students wanted to test it out and they did. As the days went by, students get to use the seating based on their table spots. I have noticed a great deal of improvement is some students independent reading. The students that need to move around during their independent work time are successful when they are sitting on the wobble chairs. The cushion chairs are providing a relaxed and comfortable tone in the classroom.

By having these seats, allowed me to see the kindness in the students. I noticed that they are becoming more independent in their decisions in who is using the chairs. Sometimes, a student might really want the chair but knows who needs it most and decides to give it to the specific student in need.

    We thank you donors.”

  • Craving the News

    Funded Dec 30, 2015

I want to start off by saying thank you for your donations. My class greatly appreciates it. We are constantly using the Scholastic News articles during Reading and for our Writing Unit. My fellow co-teachers and myself love the articles at the end of scholastic that allow our students to debate. The latest article we used to debate and write a short response on "Should Selling Water Bottles in a National Park be Banned?" We first read all of the articles that connected to our debate and then began the fun.

When my students first saw our two brand new Scholastic News packet, everyone started cheering. They started to think of different reasons on why they should get two articles at a time instead of one. I ended up giving them both articles. They partner read an article and shared what they read with assigned partners. One of my students began a collection booklet for every article he receives.

I will be giving the Scholastic News articles after the NYS exams as a fun read after the tests. After the exams are done, we will pick few articles and start doing our social issues/ Journalism unit at the end of the year.

Once again, thank you so much donors. Without you guys, this would not have been possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rivera

The majority of my students are English Language Learners from diverse backgrounds. My students love to learn and get excited when they share a text or an article they all have read. Through out the year, students are always reading Fiction books, however, when it comes to Non Fiction our selection is limited. Most of the nonfiction books we have in our library are either to hard or not interesting to a 4th grader. My students have always loved Scholastic News articles. Every time they would see me hold a new copy of the article, excited whispers would spread across the room. Once they would receive the article, there would be silence in certain parts of the room, while others would go to a different section of the room and partner read. In the end, everyone was talking to each other about what they have read. It was amazing to see how motivated and excited they were to discuss the articles. My students were also excited to take it home and share it with their parents
