The material that I am requesting will have multiple use within the school. First, these materials will be used to teach a 2 week Chess class, in which majority of my students will have their first time exposure to this game which involves the utilization of multiple useful skills. During this two week course (2 hours per day), they will learn the fundamentals of chess and get the opportunity to play chess games with each other. They will be challenged by chess puzzles and situational chess positions which will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. These materials will also be utilized for the new chess club that is currently being established. This chess club will allow students to continue developing their skills and give them opportunities to interact with others in local and national tournaments. Chess has been known to be a "nerd" game because of the intelligence an individual must show to play. Chess helps to improve the IQ of those who play on a consistent basis as it works the mind and helps with the ability to problem solve, plan and execute, and assess situations. Students who have difficulty concentrating during a task normally develop better focus. Developing better focus can improve other skills in the classroom such as reading, writing and analyzing of information. Chess is also good for strengthen memory skills and creativity. Exercising the brain of young children is always beneficial and chess is a fun, engaging way to do so.
