These read alouds will be the mentor text for lessons on diversity, gender identity, gender equality, and mental health. As my students are struggling with their own mental health and are being part of a world wide movement involving racial oppression, they need to see characters that look like them and they need to read about how these characters overcame these obstacles because of the color of their skin. I'm hoping that with these books, my students will feel encouraged to use their voices to not only stand for themselves but for others as well.
