My students perform a variety of job related tasks including delivering mail, custodial, clerical and assembly line tasks such as sorting and stocking. They even run their own coffee shop each day in which staff members can pick up coffee or have it delivered to them! Within the coffee shop, students are developing skills such as taking orders in person or via phone, working the cash register, stocking, budgeting, following a 7-step brewing process, delivering to customers classrooms and billing. Throughout the school day, my students are consistently interacting with staff members, when completing vocational tasks. When engaging with staff, my students struggle with their ability to communicate, especially spontaneous communication. Having these iPod touches, will allow them to easily access scripts, icons, and relevant topics on a daily basis. The goal is not to take away their verbal communication skills, but to reinforce and help develop them through consistent practice.
