  • Reading for All: Promoting Diversity Through Literature

    Funded Oct 21, 2024

Our equity club has had the incredible opportunity to read books with elementary school students, fostering a love of reading and helping to build essential literacy skills. Many of the books we've introduced to the younger students focus on diverse characters, experiences, and themes, which not only promote empathy but also open the door for important conversations about identity, community, and social justice. These texts help young readers develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, while also introducing vital skills such as comprehension, vocabulary building, and critical thinking.

In our classroom, reading looks like a collaborative, engaging experience. The high school students in our club read aloud, discuss the storylines, and ask the younger students questions to encourage them to think about the text in new ways. It's not just about reading the words—it's about connecting the story to the students' lives and encouraging them to express their thoughts. Some of our elementary readers, especially those who are still developing confidence in their skills, have particularly enjoyed these sessions because they see themselves in the stories we share, and they feel supported by older peers who are invested in their learning. For these students, the act of reading together has become a space of excitement and validation, sparking their curiosity and motivating them to explore new books on their own.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Santos

  • Transforming Math Class: Help Us Get Vertical Whiteboards!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

I wanted to take a moment to share how my students and I have been utilizing the new vertical whiteboards you generously helped provide.

Since incorporating the boards into our classroom, I've seen a remarkable shift in engagement. For instance, during a recent math project on geometry, students collaborated in small groups, using the boards to illustrate their ideas and work through problems together. The dynamic setup not only fostered teamwork but also encouraged them to communicate their thought processes, which was particularly beneficial for our English language learners. Their excitement was palpable when they first saw the boards; they immediately began brainstorming ways to use them, and their enthusiasm set a positive tone for the entire lesson.

Looking ahead, we're diving into a science project where students will research and present on local ecosystems. The boards will serve as interactive presentation tools, allowing students to share their findings visually and work together to create a comprehensive display. This hands-on approach not only reinforces their learning but also boosts their confidence in public speaking and collaboration.

Thank you once again for your support. Your contribution is making a meaningful impact in our classroom, and I can't wait to share more successes with you in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Santos

  • Reading About Diversity and Culture

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Thank you for allowing our classroom library spaces to be more diverse for our students. The book reflects many children in the classroom. It is being used as a social emotional learning experience to connect students around identity building.

Students feel so represented by the book and it was showcased as a must read for Hispanic Heritage Month. It was great to share stories about diversity and history from Latin American countries. It is a perfect segue into writing about our own identities and family cultures.

This book allowed students to be more self aware about themselves and their families. It was great to build skills around understanding self and their relationships to others around them. There is so much rich reflections that were happening because of it. Really excited to continue building upon the work that we've stated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Santos

  • Basketball Players Ready to Play!

    Funded Nov 13, 2017

Thank you for your donation! It has allowed out basketball team to grow and flourish in our first year. We have been able to learn so much this year and it is all because you provided us with the resources to do so. We love our jerseys and basketballs that you all helped us acquire. We use our basketballs during practice and when away teams come to play us.

Students were so excited to hear that you donated to our team. They really appreciate that you care so much in wanting them to succeed. They all work very hard and know they have many supporters. We are half way through the season and are fighting for a playoff spot.

We hope that the second half of the season brings a lot of great memories and fun. We know if you supporting us we will go a long way. We have already accomplished so much. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to grow and get better.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Santos

My students are joining the Middle School Basketball League for the first year. Last year we worked very hard to develop our basketball skills and we are now ready to compete. These items will allow us to complete and have the proper resources to play at a high level. Last year students were bringing in their own basketballs to play but this year we need to get them some regulation game balls to play. We have teams coming in from other schools so we also need a scoreboard and a scorebook. This team is a great group of different kids who are passionate about the game.
