My school is creating a school library for students to use during their independent reading time. Because a huge part of reading is being able to connect to the characters, experiences, and authors, I want to make sure that my students have access to books they can relate to on a personal level. I want to make sure that they can see themselves in characters of books they read. The majority of my students are students of color who come from low income backgrounds. The books and authors I have chosen speak to those experiences. Through reading those books and authors, my hope is that students will grow to love reading and develop a thirst to read more books. These books will allow my students to build background knowledge about a variety of topics as well as how to learn how to navigate the social nuances of being a member of this world. Frequent reading is proven to build reading comprehension, stronger vocabulary, stronger fluency skills, and overall reading stamina. In addition to helping my students develop a love a reading, you will also help our school to build a scholarly culture in which it's cool to be a book worm! I see this library as a place where my students can meet new people and share with others why they love various texts and authors. I can also see them debating over authors' writing styles or creating alternative endings to books they loved or hated. All of this starts with the turn of a page of a book that interests them.
