Readers, Thinkers, Creators, Jr.
Funded Apr 25, 2019Thank you so much for funding our Readers, Thinkers, Creators!. Jr project. We are working hard to make sure the school library is the heart of the school. Our vision is to transform the library into a collaborative learning space that encourages reading, exploration, and creativity. The resources that YOU have helped us purchase are important to that transformation.
These resources create opportunities for learning that engage K-1 students in critical thinking, collaboration and authentic, real-world problem-solving. The Remote Control Gear-Bot, for example, encourages creativity in students by allowing them to envision and create their own robot, and also provides an introduction to the robotics program we are incorporating into all grade levels. Robotics and coding are a great way to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Students are also getting very creative with the building sets. This week a first grader used the Gears set to build a trash compactor. He did not have the vocabulary to name it, but was very clear about the purpose of his project and what it would do. I am so excited to see what else they come up with.
One area of great focus for grades K-1 is social skills. These resources are being used in small group settings. The children are working collaboratively to play, think, and problem-solve. When playing the game, Don't Let the Bugs Fall, students are helpful and encouraging to each other. The Mad Matter Sensory dough is also a great addition. We have used the dough cutters to work on letters and sounds. All of these activities really do foster a variety of skills.
You have truly helped us move forward in our goal to transform the library into a collaborative learning space that encourages reading, exploration, and creativity!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Anderson

The flexible seating has allowed students to move around the room to collaborate with a partner, find personal reading space, and work in small groups. The students love these sturdy and comfortable seats. They provide more flexibility for our centers and encourage reading and collaborative exploration.
The Poetry books are beautiful and have been a great addition to our Reading Cafe center. Students love reading them. They provided a much-needed update to our poetry section! The other center resources, such as the magnetic letters, are also being used to help foster literacy development and critical and creative thinking.
