Global Science Readers
Funded Jan 13, 2022our scholars experienced many unique opportunities while reading. They discovered STEM careers in NYC and countrywide, learnt more about NYC schools cafeterias and its food choices and the importance of beekeeping to our ecosystem among many others. Every science teacher knows that science is everything-it embeds social studies, math, ELA, the Arts and these magazines allowed my students to enjoy a cross curricular experience every time they read these articles.
Most of all, they were able to see themselves reflected in the diversity of the articles presented. These magazines are priceless.”

Impacting Junior Scientists
Funded Dec 12, 2023Providing expansive ideas to students is so important in ensuring that they can select from multiple perspectives on varied topics. These magazines that you sponsored give them the opportunity for local and global readings, activities, career options and provides scope for the multiple intelligences my scholars present daily within the classroom.
We thank you.”

Improving our Science Capitals
Funded Nov 29, 2017One of the main advantages that these beautifully illustrated magazines provided to my students is an interest in casual reading in Science. It allowed them to realize that reading scientifically based articles did not only have to be available from textbooks. These magazines provided a "buzz" and I observed what their reading interests were from robotics to the solar system and planets, from animals and technology to chemistry. That "Running out of Chocolate" issue in the Big Air issue on February 12th, 2018 was a HUGE favorite.
One skill they developed was "book club" reading discussions. The multiple copies allowed students to have discussions about multiple articles using the same magazines. So I could differentiate by allowing some student groups to explore and discuss the feature article while other groups made connections with the shorter articles. So all students were reading while building their reading stamina and learning.
My boys showed much more interest in the articles overall. It's probably the fact that the magazines had such a wide variety of topics that their interest was piqued and continued growing as they read. Evidence of their interest was the fact that they would get magazines in their free moments and huddle as they all read and talked about the "Hands Free Cars" or the "Sea Bug Bites" among other articles.
Finally, my students benefited from the additional Ondine videos that came with feature articles and I also introduced an www.edmodo.com website that was designed to allow them to share opinions and discussions about the article of the week such as "Speedy Shoe" in the March 26th issue.
We are extremely thankful for your support”
