Kelly's project inspired me to do more with connecting literacy and parent involvement! Reading can take you around the world and back. With this project, I want my students to understand that reading has the ability to allow readers to explore new cultures while reflecting those who are reading. This connection between book and self is pivotal to student engagement and comprehension of what they are reading. Therefore, I want to get books that demonstrate diversity and mirror my classroom's demographics. With these books, Out of My Mind, Tears of a Tiger, and The Kite Runner, I want to have a diversity fair where parents and people from the community can come in and learn about different cultures and people from different walks of life through the books we have read! This type of parent and community involvement will help motivate my students in that it will be their responsibility to read, learn, and present about how literature unites everyone!
