It is our dream to be able to build a school wide garden where our students will be able to take a hands-on approach to their learning. It is statistically shown that children learn exponentially better when they are able to physically interact with the topics and standards they are learning about. With high stakes testing putting an emphasis on Reading and Math in the classroom, learning gaps often occur in Science. Our goal is to close those achievement gaps, better preparing our students for this technological world in which we live. These supplies will give our students the ability to take ownership of the learning by cultivating a garden that is their own. Not only will we be having the students plant the garden, but they will also be responsible for maintaining it as well. A majority of the supplies we need is to help start and maintain the garden. Each grade level will get a vegetable and flower seed pack so they can decided what plants are best for them. When we initially plant, we need seeds and soil so that we have a verity of plants that can flourish. The shovels and watering cans are to allow each grade level to maintain their specific area and what they grew. The benches are going to go in specified areas to allow seating for students, teachers can use the benches for science lessons, or even to just let the students enjoy the natural environment while reading. We plan to use this space for engaging science lessons showing the students real world examples on topics that they are learning about in the classroom. Not only will this space be for science it also will be used as a quiet tranquil silent reading space.
