Many of my students read below grade level which makes textbooks and many other books inaccessible. Motivation to read is also a problem but the surest way to become a better reader is to read! So, how do we get kids to read who don't want to read? Readers' Theater provides this practice as they repeatedly read their scripts as they prepare to perform them for the class. Students don't realize they are practicing literacy skills and since these scripts are also teaching content and providing a deeper understanding of it - all the better. And they love it! Students don't memorize the lines. They practice them in order to perform them with expression. This builds fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, not to mention social studies content! What kid doesn't love cartoons or comics? A class set of cartoon history books will provide another point of access to content for my students. Again, this is practicing reading through the use of comics which also teach content. Both of these activities are so fun for the kids that they don't even realize they are practicing reading and studying content!
