"Mr. Kenny, how come we don't have any school teams like other schools in Los Angeles?" Such a question was one that I was faced with seemingly on a daily basis throughout the school year. I knew that the answer to this question ultimately came down to money - after school sports programs don't come cheap. The cost of balls, field space, referees, leagues and coaching fees add up. Most schools that are fortunate enough to have these programs pass the costs on to families. At a low-income school, paying a participating fee of 100 dollars in addition of buying their own practicing equipment is not an option for our students. The staff members at our school believe that your zip code should not dictate what kind of opportunities you get growing up as a student. Having personally been a student - athlete growing up, I know first hand the benefits of participating in a sports program - it builds resilience and character in students. An after school sports program will allow our students to experience the joys of playing competitively with other schools as well as further helping our school build the characters of resilience and grit that will help our scholars further succeed in the classroom and beyond. We have been fortunate enough to be collaborating with local non-profits and foundations in order to make an after school sports program a reality for our students for the next school year. The donations from donors choose would cover the one time fee of purchasing the basic sports equipment for a long-term after school sports program. The equipment (Basketball, Soccer Ball and Soccer Shin Guards) will allow us have productive practices and remove the financial burden of having students acquire expensive sports equipment.
