Here's a little story about how my class gets flipped and turned all around. Flipped classrooms are learning environments that allow students to explore learning with the teacher in non-traditional ways. Results from flipped classrooms show great promise. There is evidence that the flipped classroom model improves student achievement in nearly every subject. According to the Flipped Learning Network, 71% of teachers who flipped their classes noticed markedly improved grades, and 80% reported improved student attitudes as a result. What’s more, 99% of teachers who flipped their classes reported that they would flip their classes again the following year. The term flipped in my class means more than just using the headphones for listening to taped videos on current skills and prescribed skills. Flipped is also the way I am describing the flexible seating in my classroom such as the stools with a unique shape that allow students to sit in three different directions easily. The balls that allow students that need more movement the ability to do so without disturbing others. The bean bag chairs can be a choice for students that need a more relaxed position to work and listen to the lessons. The bands on the bottoms of the chairs give students with restless feet a place to put their feet that allows for movement with out disrupting others. The ability to differentiate learning in the physical environment by giving students choices allows them to take responsibility for their learning and behaviors.
