Getting students excited about science is easy when they are doing an experiment or when you are blowing something up. But ask them to read about science? To write about science? Now that's a tough sell. There are a lot of good books out there about science topics that are written in an easy to follow way, and I want to introduce my students to them! I want to have a science book club for my students as their end of year project. They will have a choice of several books that cover scientific topics from neuroscience to poisonous plants. In groups they will read a book about an application of the science they have learned throughout the school year and engage in discussion and writing, finally culminating in a presentation for the other students in the class. Making connections to real life applications is often difficult for students to make, especially in science. The more relevant the content is to them, the more engaged they can be in their learning. Beyond the content itself, the ability to comprehend and write about scientific topics will be an invaluable skill that is never too early to develop. Help make my students better scientists by allowing them to have authentic experiences with reading and writing about scientific concepts.
