Students will select, read, discuss and write about young adult novels focused on diversity and inclusion, including Dear Martin by Nic Stone, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. Reading in small book clubs, discussing the novels and writing about their themes in the context of current social activism will engage and motivate all students, even reluctant readers. Engaging in discussions and writing focused on making connections between students' lives, current social activism, and these literary works, students will come to embrace Dr. King's view that, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
