Mini Golf: STEAM Engineering and Design
Funded Aug 1, 2023I am currently teaching this Engineering – Mini Golf class on a trimester schedule, and we just started trimester #2 at the beginning of December. My students and I have set out to use our math, engineering and creativity skills to design and build a Pittsburgh themed 9-hole miniature golf course.
I wanted to be sure to complete the Pittsburgh Steeler themed hole first in order to include photos in this thank you letter.
My students are excited anytime I can show them the intersection of math and real life. This project is bringing to life their passion for learning yet having fun at the same time. It has pushed me as a teacher to learn new things myself. While we have completed 1 hole, we have 8 more still in the beginning stages – we've built the foundations, designed the courses and layouts and are currently working on making the obstacles. We cannot wait to finish the entire project and play them as an incentive.
Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH to Donor's Choose, the CAM HEYWARD Foundation, and the Audrey Hillman Fisher Foundation for the donations, the project wouldn't have been possible without your support. The donation allowed us to get the putting turf, golf balls and clubs to be able to turn this idea into reality.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Murdock

Funded Aug 9, 2022My students used Kente Cloth to display their learning and creativity in our latest geometry unit for Black History Month. The students learned about the history of the fabric and what the different symbol and colors represented.
Students designed an African Member of Royalty and then "cut it up" into polygons they knew to calculate it's total area. This involved a pretty challenging mathematical conversion at the end where they were faced with converting blocks to square inches. They designed a quilt pattern and used different fabrics to finalize their member of royalty and added it to our quilt/bulletin board.
My students are excited anytime I can show them the intersection of math and art. This project brought to light their creativity and enhanced their geometry skills.
Thank you so much for the donations for the Kente cloth, the project wouldn't have been complete without it!”

Funded Jan 4, 2022My students learned to use a form of embroidery, called counted cross stitching. They chose a topic that was meaningful to them, ranging from BLM, to veterans, pride, feminism, body positivity, domestic violence, substance abuse and many others. The designed a pattern to complete and did so using this newly learned technique. The frames that were donate brought to life these works of art. While the students were so proud of their work before being mounted and framed, the joy that I saw on their faced once they received their art back mounted and framed was made through your generous donations.
Students are excited to continue to use their knowledge to future works of art. They have already come up with new ideas and plans to give their pieces to someone that it means something to, ie. a person battle cancer, struggling with identity and veterans.
Thank you so much for the frames, the project wouldn't have been complete without them!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Murdock
