"Genius Hour" originated at innovative tech companies, such as Google, where employers noticed an increase in productivity, focus, and morale when employees were given twenty percent of their work week to pursue their own projects and passions. Ever since I first heard about Genius Hour, I have been dying to try it out in my classroom and set aside designated class time for students to work on projects completely of their own choosing. When I first launched Genius Hour in our classroom, my students overwhelmingly expressed excitement to spend this time doing art projects, including painting, pottery, animation, puppet making, and wood working. This came as no surprise to me, as our school has no art teacher or program and many of these students have reached fifth grade without ever taking a formal art class. The little time they do get for art, comes when classroom teachers squeeze it in around our seemingly endless curriculum, paying for all materials and supplies entirely out of our own pockets at great expense. Your generous donations will allow these students freedom to express themselves, pursue their own interests and explore a mode of learning which is often unavailable to them. Please help change these children's lives for the better by giving them the opportunity to do art!
