Everyday I have the pleasure of working with the most beautiful bunch of fourth graders. Many of our students have limited real world experiences and often lack background knowledge of many topics we teach. Virginia Studies is a struggle for our students because they often do not see themselves in history. It is essential that we address this need of our students by providing learning experiences they can connect to themselves. The purpose of this trip is to provide our students, who are mostly African American, with the opportunity to see themselves in a historical aspect. They will see the history of their ancestors and make connections to their own lives. Many of our students face day to day hardships and often struggle with self-love. They will see the resilience and beauty within their culture in hopes to provide a sense of pride.

About my class
