  • Shakespeare's World on Stage

    Funded Apr 18, 2018

My students had an excellent time exploring a new part of New York City and attending a performance of King Lear at the BAM theater in Brooklyn. Some students had never attended a play before, and many students had never been to such a beautiful historic theater before. Though the Shakespearean language sometimes proved challenging, students truly enjoyed the theatrics and the overall story. For those that had previously read the text, it was wonderful to see it brought to life on the stage.

Students particularly enjoyed the second half of the play which involved a lot more physical action. The staging and the props were elaborate and wonderfully detailed, and students loved watching it all come together on stage. It was a fun experience for students and a different way to spend a Friday night.

This trip prompted many conversations back at campus. We were able to talk more thoughtfully about the themes of the play, and students better understood the structure of a drama, seeing how stage directions came to life versus just being read in a text. Even something as simple as an intermission was a new understanding for some students, and experiencing it in context helped students to see the impact of a pause.

Thank you so much for allowing my students to take advantage of this cultural experience!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. DiAddezio

  • College Chatter: Encouraging Post-Secondary Accomplishments and Awareness

    Funded May 29, 2018

Thank you so much for your donation! We are overjoyed to provide these resources and goodies to our students to celebrate their hard work and effort in the college process. I appreciate your generosity. This is a huge accomplishment for our students many of whom are first-generation college students. We can't wait to give them a celebration event for their college acceptances and decisions!”

  • College Chatter: Encouraging Post-Secondary Accomplishments and Awareness

    Funded Apr 26, 2017

My students were thrilled by the opportunity to be celebrated and to learn more about the college experience through a fun and exciting assembly! Because of your donation, we were able to provide one very deserving student with a brand new laptop to use during college. For others, we were able to challenge them with tricky college trivia questions and award them with college swag prizes. Students were literally jumping out of their seats for the opportunity to try and answer a question. The crowd was filled with laughter and smiles and energy and all of this around college acceptances and college challenge questions! Our senior students received the chance to be celebrated and to see their pictures and their college commitments projected in front of the entire school community. Their efforts were rewarded. We had music and lights and confetti and gifts, and our students completely ran the show and had a great time. They were still talking about it for a couple days. Student MCs led the way. Student volunteers coordinated prizes and questions. This was a student-led celebration, and the smiles on their face showed that they were excited to be recognized and to have a chance to get silly and have fun when learning about college. Thank you for your support in making this event happen and for bringing a new experience to our students!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. DiAddezio

We are working on building a strong college culture in our school. To this end, we are planning a College Signing Day. All grades will be involved. This will be the day to talk college and celebrate all the hard work and effort that went into our seniors' college process as well as to encourage younger students to have college as a goal and to see that goal as a reality. These materials will help us to make the day truly memorable. Seniors will be recognized and celebrated for signing with a college through an all-school assembly and presentation. They will receive goody bags to further honor their efforts. We will have college trivia questions for the younger grades and will award students by tossing out college-related prizes (pencils, t-shirts, bracelets, etc.). For all 12th grade students that signed with a college, we will also be raffling off a brand new Chromebook to help support them in their post-secondary pursuits. We want college chatter to pervade student conversations throughout the school so that college, or more importantly high expectations, is the culture. The vast majority of our students come from families where they will be the first to go or even apply to college. We want our students to feel special and truly capable. We want them to believe college success is a realistic goal for them. Please help us to create a day that is all about them and their truly impressive resilience.
