I love to read and want to instill that passion in my students as well. However, I did a survey last year and found out that there was a large population of my students that had never read a book start to finish before! They check out their library books one week, read as much as they have to in class, and exchange it for a new book the next week. Our current curriculum teaches from excerpts which has its place, but I also want to create an opportunity for them to persevere through reading a book in its entirety. Books have the power to allow us to experience the world from different perspectives, in a different time, and different places. Refugee is a book about three children from different countries, living in different eras, who are united by their need to flee from their homeland. I chose this to be the book for our first novel study because our city gets the privilege of housing many refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Each year I teach 5-10 students from these families. I think that it would be a wonderful opportunity to shed light on their plight and allow them to see themselves reflected in literature.
