The idea for our classroom is a Pizzeria and café. Not only do my children love to cook and come up with different recipes, they also love to try new foods. They would benefit greatly from using the correct materials when many of these children may have never seen an eggplant or sweet potato. According to the MSU Extension....... "Using hands-on activities in early childhood is a great way to link new concepts to ideas that children already understand". Another article by Rosa Lizardi states..."Hands-on activities let the students' minds grow and learn based on the experiences and the environment they are exposed to. As the students become familiar with the subject they are learning, they begin to make decisions, requiring less teacher support and allowing more interactive learning experiences to occur (Cooperstein & Kocevar-Weidinger, 2004). I will do whatever it takes to make my children successful, I will give them every hands on experience I can. These children deserve to have a fighting chance. The teachers dig in their own pockets to bring these children basic materials such as toothbrushes, gloves, hats and sometimes even shoes. We will use the iPads to take orders which will help the children not only with literacy but also using electronics. Children will use pizza boxes to display the pizzas they have made. They can take orders and deliver pizzas to their friends learning how to get a pizza ready and the significants of the box. The scale will be used to measure the ingredients that go on the pizza. They will use the chef clothes to understand the way a chef dresses and the purpose of a chef hat. We would like multicultural foods to incorporate all our children's ethnicities. Everything we have added can escalate their play in many ways.
