According to Accelerated Reader, most students in America read about 40,000 words per school year in the 6th grade. That number is far fewer than the requisite minimum of 80,000 words that are necessary to grow an academic year's worth of reading growth. My students have read over 100,000 words on average, and the school year isn't even finished yet! We have established a strong literacy culture at my school site, but unfortunately, there are only so many books to go around.
My students have proven themselves to be prolific readers. They hunger and they thirst for new reading materials. Help me feed their inner literary beasts! I want to beef up the classroom library with high-interest, challenging texts that will help my students develop even greater literacy skills in order to prepare them for the text-rich environment that is awaiting them in high school, college, and beyond.
