Our sensory room, and all the items in the room, will be accessible to all students in the building. It will be primarily be used by students with IEPs who seek sensory input throughout their day, however, other students may need this break as well. Sensory rooms support children's sensory needs on a daily basis.
Sensory breaks are a way for any child, whether they have sensory needs or not, to reset, decompress, and get the blood flowing back into their brains. Sensory breaks allow students to gain sensory input they need in their bodies to stay alert, on task, and focused. Giving students breaks throughout their day lets their brains take a rest and reset. Students will most likely need more breaks to reset when returning in August due to three additional months off due to COVID19. Transitioning back to school will be difficult for some students.
Sensory rooms are rooms specifically designed to provide an enjoyable or calming multisensory experience for children. There are many therapeutic benefits to sensory rooms for children. First, it provides a fun environment for kids to be active. Exercise helps children focus and learn. Next, it reduces disruptive behaviors in classrooms and is a safe place for students to explore and get energy out. These rooms allow students to calm and relax, which helps improve emotional regulation. Last, it enhances learning. Multisensory environments activate different areas of the brain simultaenteouly which enhances learning by building neural pathways more quickly. Having the right setup, equipment, and tools makes this room beneficial and allows students access to the input they need throughout their day.
