My students are a wonderful group of kids ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade who face a unique set of challenges. The majority are from low income homes and a large percentage of them live in foster care or other out of home placements. A lot of these kids don't have money for books or a means to get to the public library. Many of them have no permanent home and can fit all their belongings in a duffel bag. They want to succeed and they want to read but many are lacking access to current, interesting books and others are reading below grade level so they feel that reading just isn't for them. Unfortunately, our school library has received no money to buy new books this year and further cuts are expected next year. I want to give these kids some new, eye catching books to prove to them that they can be readers and to show them that we believe they're worth the effort and resources to help them.
