The students in my classroom learn in so many different ways. 21st century classrooms are not the same as the traditional classroom we all are familar with. As a teacher, I need to adapt my surroundings to make my students as successful as possible. I have students with ASD, ADHD, Diabetes, and students who were born with issues related to substance abuse. These students come to school each day with a mountain of obstacles to overcome, including their bodies' natural urge to move around. The major barrier we face is remaining in traditional desks that are both uncomfortable and unsuitable for our classroom environment. The materials I have requested have been researched, well thought out and designed for the specific students in my class. Adding these materials into the classroom environment will help us get the most out of the learning experience. Flexible seating options will positively impact the emotional, social, and academic needs of my students. For example, instead of our current desks and chairs, students will have the opportunity to use stability balls, sensory cushions, floor space, wobble chairs (for my more fidgety students), etc. I also am requesting large tables. Students will have the opportunity to create a collaborative space more easily than with solely traditional desks. Students spend the majority of their waking time in my classroom and I want them to have an environment that works best for them. Traditional desks and chairs do not work for all students. I strive to make my classroom an inclusive environment that is open to collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity. Flexible seating or coffee shop style seating allows students choice. This project will not only give them a choice, but it will help them build their self-monitoring skills.
