When teaching reading I believe one of the best tools to achieve student success and engagement is through the power of novel studies. When students take control of their own reading through a consistent setup, students begin to develop meaningful connections with the characters that engage them further in the reading. It no longer becomes a forced and tedious task for them to complete. As a result, not only do students gain more focus in their reading but they also begin to develop reading comprehension skills which enables them to use process and reasoning to justify their answers. The main goal in my efforts to use novel studies in my curriculum is to build powerful and enthusiastic readers for the future. As we progress our way towards a more advanced and technological future where social media becomes a great influence in young students; I hope that through my love of novel studies and reading, I can instill change in students to feel more empowered through books than by picking up a controller to a video game that will have no educational purpose.
