Finishing this whirlwind year of 2020 in the Spring with my 2nd grade students was a blur. This year, with my new batch of 1st grade students, I want to make sure that they have literature in their classroom library that reflects inclusion, equality, and the appreciation of diverse backgrounds. Through my career, I have found that students respond well to books pertaining to social and emotional learning such as, "My Mouth Is a Volcano" by Julia Cook, and "Do Unto Otters," by Laurie Keller. I would like to ensure that the literature purchased and brought into my classroom through this project is utilized whether we adopt a hybrid or distance learning teaching model. In the event that the year begins with distance learning, I feel confident using these books through Zoom meetings, filmed video reading recordings, and even in person porch visits with students.
