Students with Autism have shown much more success in the classroom when there are defined spaces within the room and when each area has a specific purpose. These partitions will help me create a classroom that better meets the needs of my students. The partitions will help me create a "calm down"/sensory break area, OT/speech area, independent work space, and pretend play area.
The "calm down"/sensory break area will be an area for my students who may need to take a sensory break, have a moment to calm down, or take a break. Many of my students have sensory breaks built into their schedule. At this time they do not have a defined space to take that break, away from the visual and auditory stimulation of the classroom.
The partitions will also allow our speech area to be more contained and closed off which will help our speech pathologist and occupational therapist properly administer their therapies to my students.
Having a place in our classroom for independent work to actually be their independent space will allow my students to practice their tasks without becoming over stimulated or distracted by what else may be going on in our classroom. This will also allow my aides to properly assess their skills while they are practicing their tasks, leading to more accurate data.
Pretend play is a vital in the education of preschoolers. They learn so much from playing with their peers! Having a space filled with opportunity to engage on pretend play will lead to more purposeful communication, and engagement. Once the pretend play area is partitioned off , it will allow students to giggle, play, and talk without distracting other groups within our classroom.
These partitions will give my students more opportunities to engage, learn, and regulate their sensory needs.
