If you look in the list of materials, you will see that there are multiples of the same titles. These books will be use for student driven book clubs. Students will be given 9 options of books, they will be given the chance to preview the books in what I like to call a "Book Tasting". After they will make a list of their choices for books. I will then pick from their lists and form groups. Book club members will be in charge of making a reading schedule, coming up with discussion questions, and taking part in discussions. This activity breeds a love of reading and a sense of community.
Other books on the list are to fill my library with various genres and topics. It is important to give students a plethora of books to choose from when they are engaging in adventurous reading. I am hoping to gain a large span of books, varying in topic, genre, and lexile level so that every student will find a book that speaks to them. These books will be used for readers' workshop.
With these books, my students will be given many doorways (genres) in which to discover the reader within and go on journeys they never imagined possible. With these books students will engage in book clubs where they choose the book they want to read, decide their own reading schedule and discussion questions. Our classroom community will form around these books and the discussions we have about them. These books will be where students apply comprehension and phonics skills learned in our class. Students will learn about fantasy, the world, and themselves. With these books, all that is left, is the many adventures we will all take! I am requesting a wide variety of literature titles with which to tempt my students as well as multiple copies of selected titles for our book clubs.
