You may know that with increasing focus on Common Core standards there has been more demand for academic rigor and focus. With this increase, students have been required to endure lengthy lessons and hours of in class work to show their understanding of skills and concepts. My students are working very hard, but I have to remember that they are only 8-9 years old and have a lot of stored up energy. Research shows that when students are able to choose their own seat for learning (which includes different modalities of movement) that their engagement, focus and learning improves significantly because they 're taking ownership and are able to better receive information in a way that suits their learning style. By incorporating flexible seating in my classroom, I hope to increase student attentiveness and motivation to learn by creating an environment in which students can make choices about their seating to better engage and focus them, allowing them more ownership over their learning.
