My students need manipulatives to help them get a handle on 1st Grade Math concepts. My students need fewer worksheets and more time spent connecting concepts to concrete items that are both fun and open ended so we can mess around with all kinds of math learning. We are about to start geometry and having access to concrete 2 and 3 dimensional shapes will help them master things like sides, angles, vertices and faces. When learning non-standard measurement it would be invaluable to have enough links to let them each measure and explore on their own- no time lost waiting for another student to finish using the materials. Currently my classroom has access to linking cubes, plastic money, and a small amount of pattern blocks. All items are shared between 2 large first grade classrooms. I want to have a permanent math area in this classroom to allow for the students to access pattern blocks, counter, geometric shapes and more during independent work periods during the day as well as during math instruction.
