Though incredibly intelligent, many of my students read below grade-level and are extremely reluctant readers. Most have never fully read a novel. Students do not identify with many of the district assigned novels and quickly resign themselves from the reading. They need a text that is highly engaging, accessible, but still rigorous in themes and ideas. The graphic novel, Watchmen, is that perfect text, especially for 12th graders. My seniors will be reading and analyzing the graphic novel, Watchmen. Through the unit, they will break into literature circles to focus on reading the text through a specific "lens" (e.g. historical, gender, psychological). In their small groups, they will read and study scenes and characters through looking at the text through their lens. The culminating assignment will be to write a college-level, take-home essay on what the graphic novel is arguing about their lens. For example, if looking at the text from a gender standpoint, one may discuss how female heroes are treated by their male counterparts. Receiving a class set of Watchmen, will make my students the critical readers that I know they are and prepare them for engaging with complex texts in their future.
