The need to encourage empathy for others is being felt in classrooms across the country. Libraries can be key to facilitating these discussions and understandings.I think by incorporating books that are more familiar to a students' own backgrounds and experiences, will encourage a love of reading. During independent reading time, my students will have an opportunity everyday to select books that peak their interest. My students really enjoy reading and they always find a way to make connections to what they read. So by introducing these various cultural and diverse books, not only will it encourage self-awareness but also encourage them to be respectful of other cultures.
