Too many of my students lack basic number sense. They have a hard time adding and subtracting without some tool (paper and pencil, fingers, or calculator). This translates into students that do not have confidence in themselves when they are in math class. Games like dominoes provide them with a great way to build number sense and confidence in themselves at the same time. Another huge benefit that games and activities have over solely pencil and paper assignments, is that the students actually like doing them! When the students are having fun and are engaged, we can accomplish anything. There is nothing more wonderful than watching students realize that math can be fun and make sense.
