My student are currently learning about Civil Rights, segregation, and the continuing struggle for social justice. We have analyzed videos, historical fictional novels, primary documents, and information articles on the topic. We have written essays and held debates. This graphic novel would not only provide an additional medium of study but also provide a unique window into this part of history and current events for my students. Furthermore, my students love graphic novels and this novel will be a great way to introduce an additional literary genre and point of view into our discussion and learning. Media literate youth are better able to process and understand the many messages we receive from our media environment such as television, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines etc. As such, allowing my students to analyze and understand the role graphic novels play in today's media will continue to build media literacy for my students so that they can strengthen skills that are crucial for their success. This unit's goal is for students to understand how to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Their end project will be to create their own historical fiction graphic novel.
